Grain suppliers for home milling in Australia

More website bits and pieces (1).png

There are a growing number of producers supplying excellent quality flours, wheats and other whole grains for home milling, bread making and general culinary use in Australia. I strongly encourage home millers and bakers to purchase organic or biodynamically grown products if you can - for the health of the environments they are grown in as well as your own.

This page has information about the Mockmill I use to mill my fresh flour at home, along with links to purchase worldwide, inlcuding discounts available in some locations.

This listing contains details of Australian suppliers that I have either used personally or which have been recommended to me. The outlets you choose to purchase your grain from will depend on your location. Buy the grains grown in your own state or region if you can.

If you live in the United States or other parts of the world, I strongly encourage you to ask among your own local networks (or go sleuthing online) for your nearest suppliers. If you are in the USA or Europe, you’ll most likely be spoilt for choice! Send messages and emails to companies, join forums and Facebook groups, and ask lots of questions. In some regions you really have to search for good quality grain.

Other places to consider that aren’t on the main list:

  • Indian grocers (many sell good quality Australian grown cereal grains, legumes, etc.)

  • Middle-Eastern grocers/supermarkets

  • European and Mediterranean delicatessens

  • local fruit and vegie shops (they often have dry goods sections)

  • farmer’s markets

Suppliers with an asterisk (*) beside their name are those that I have purchased
from myself and can recommend personally.

This information is up to date at the time of writing. Please let me know if you would like me to add someone to the list or a correction/update is needed!

Thanks to Maree Tink of Simply Sourdough and the Sourdough Baking Australia group on Facebook, Chris Stafferton (The Bread Architect in Tasmania) and friend David Benporath for their knowledge and assistance in putting this list together.

* Sovereign Foods - Moorooka shop & Northey St City Farm markets, Brisbane
Sovereign Foods are a wonderful local Brisbane organisation supplying very high quality organic and biodynamic grains and pantry produce from a range of Australian producers. To date, I have purchased organic wheat, rye, spelt, khorasan, rice and oats - and hope to buy more!
Produce can be purchased from their Moorooka shop on Wednesdays (see site for details), or from their stall at Northey Street City Farm markets on Sunday mornings. If you make a request in advance, large bags of grain can be bought to the market for you - just take your wheelbarrow!

* Flannerys Organic & Wholefood Market - Various locations Brisbane/Gold & Sunshine Coast
Flannerys are a local retail health food/organic market chain with a number shops in Brisbane and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts. For many years Flannerys was my main supplier of organic whole wheat and rye flour. I haven’t purchased there recently because I’d rather purchase in bulk, and direct from producers if possible, but Flannerys is a good option if you are starting out and would like to try your hand at whole grain baking without purchasing bulk lots of grain. The last time I checked, Flannerys were selling whole wheat grain supplied by Kialla Pure Foods on the Darling Downs (listed below). Many of their flours and other bagged flours and grains are also sourced from Kialla.

* Kialla Pure Foods - Greenmount (close to Toowoomba), Qld
I have been baking bread with Kialla flours for decades! Their flours and whole grain supplies come from a range of organic growers around Queensland (and possibly beyond these days - some homework for me there). Kialla mill is located in Greenmount, about 30 minutes drive south of Toowoomba, on the Darling Downs, here in South East Queensland. Kialla is not a retail outlet, but if you order large bags of grain in advance (pay by credit card over the phone) they can be collected directly from the mill at Greenmount. Kialla supply many of their products to health food shops around Australia.

* Kunara Organic Marketplace - Sunshine Coast, Qld
A wonderful big organic retail market on the Sunshine Coast (Forest Glen), with an excellent cafe on site. I haven’t been there for a few years, but last time I stopped in I was impressed! Call ahead to check if they have the grain or flour you are looking for.

The Source Bulk Foods - various stores around Australia (capital cities, except NT and TAS)
Various grains available, most stores appear to sell organic whole wheat grain. Rye, farro and various non-gluten grains are also listed online. Lower prices may be found through other suppliers but a beginning option if you’d like to start small and purchase in-store.

* Four Leaf Milling  - Tarlee, SA
Growers and processors of a wide variety of certified organic and biodynamic grains, legumes and other pantry staple crops. I have enjoyed using a range of Four Leaf grains over the years, one of my favourites being their gorgeous organic ‘Egyptian Gold’ wheat, which they have cultivated after being given only six grains over thirty years ago! From all accounts and comparisons I’ve undertaken with other whole grain bakers internationally, this grain is the same as (if not a very close relative of) the more commonly known khorasan ancient wheat variety, which is thought to be a predecessor to modern Durum wheat. (‘Kamut’ is also another registered khorasan variety, trademarked under that name). Make sure you check out Four Leaf Milling’s range - highly recommended!
